The Summer Coach Outing to Lavenham and Melford Hall on Saturday July 7th was well supported, by members and friends. They were first divided into two groups for a guided tour of Lavenham, which has been described as "the most complete medieval town in Britain ", with its fine houses and a superb church.

The town had derived its wealth from the weaving of woollen cloth. Many of its fine half-timbered buildings had been owned by wealthy wool merchants. The fine 16th century timber -framed Guildhall is now owned by the National Trust. Inside were exhibitions relating to the town. There was time for lunch and to admire the church, with its many carvings, before heading off to Melford Hall - another NT property. The exterior of the house has changed little since Queen Elizabeth I was entertained there in 1578. It retains its original panelled banquetting hall. Beatrix Potter was a relative of the Hyde Parker family. Some of her original drawings were on display. Soon it was time leave for the homeward journey, after an interesting and well-organised day.
