A project to transcribe and index the 1901 census for Rushden was undertaken by the Rushden & District History Society in August/September 2002 to add to our collection of documents and indexes for display at the first "Rushden Discovery Day" in October 2002. It has since been re-checked and is now presented together with the rest of the parishes of the Higham Ferrers Hundred, which have been transcribed during 2003.
The "hundred" was an ancient administration district and the parishes which together form the Higham Ferrers Hundred are Bozeat, Chelveston cum Caldecott, Easton Maudit with Strixton, Hargrave, Higham Ferrers, Irchester, Newton Bromswold, Raunds, Ringstead, Rushden, Stanwick & Wollaston. Rushden was by far the largest parish with 12,455 names in the index. Covington in Huntingdonshire was also included as it was enumerated with Hargrave.
Our transcript also has the Public Records Office reference, the folio number and page number to help locate the entry in the original records.
Errors will occur, either from the original evidence given, the poor education of some of the inhabitants, misreading of handwriting by the enumerator, mistakes in our transcription or missed by checkers. We hope there will not be too many faults, but we will be pleased to receive notice of any discrepancies found.
The transcription is available for sale on CD-ROM in Adobe Acrobat (pdf) format for £5 per copy.
